Ebbies Hair & Nail Salon, Inc owned by Ebony Fletcher

Ebony Fletcher was an only child raised in Canarie Brooklyn, NY by her great-grandmother. Being raised by a minister, she was taught values, morals, respect for others and herself. Her grandmother taught her to never lose her faith in God! Growing up in Brooklyn’s projects was not always easy. She had to focus on greater things in life not just what she saw everyday in her neighborhood. Ebony has been through tremendous tragedies in her life; almost being murdered by her ex boyfriend and  the passing of her friend, protector and guardian: her grandmother. Through the years she found ways to channel negative energy into positive energy. Ebony started working with the Department of Education at the age of 19. She went to Long Island Universtiy and studied Child Psychology.

Describe your business. List location, phone number, website.

I am the proud owner of Ebbies Hair & Nail Salon, Inc. a full service hair and nail salon in the metro-area of New York City and has been a corporation since February 21, 2008. Our business telephone number is 347-742-5431. Our website is www.ebbieshairandnailsalon.webs.com.

What motivated you to open your own business?

In 2005, I went to Hair Design Institute to brush up on my hair styling, textures and color applications. I graduated with a 98.7 GPA and was asked if I could come back to teach a weaving course at the school. At the time, I was pursuing my own dream of becoming a salon owner. I worked on my business plan of a very detailed salon and spa and it was completed in 2007. I left my job of working with the Department of Education after 12 years and decided that teaching was not my main goal. It was the best decision I ever made in my entire life!

Did you have any initial fears or concerns that you had to overcome when opening your business?

Finances always play a part when opening your first business. You have to do intensive research of the market your entering to know your competitors. A business plan and financial statements are required to get a loan or either a grant. It’s a rough process but, I’m taking it one step at a time.

How did you develop your concept?

I’ve worked with some of the top hair salons in Brooklyn, NY. I viewed what others in the industry are doing in their business and I take notes. I had this vision for a salon & spa that I would like to get serviced at if I was the client. I learned that my clients come first and to treat each one of them like royalty.

How much capital did you need to get started? Did you use any creative funding sources?

Even though Ebbies is not in an actual location it starts at home. Ebony is researching for capital to open a building in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. She will need $25,000 for startup seed. These funds will be used for all necessary equipment, supplies, and products. I’m working with a lot of venture funding groups as well as some people in my community that can help fund as well.

How do you market your business? Do you use any creative marketing strategies?

The hair care industry is always changing. I look at the latest fashion in clothes, shoes and accessories. Sometimes it’s just how the client is feeling for that day depends on the style. I have a very detailed promotional strategy from January-December where we promote discounts and free services to our faithful clients.

How do you manage employees if any?

As of right now I am the only employee at Ebbies.

What are some of your day to day struggles as a business owner?

Paperwork, paperwork and more paperwork.

What brings you the most joy from your work?

To see the smile on my clients face when i’m done!

How do you balance work life and family? Do your work demands affect your relationships?

You have to keep focused on your goal. There will be distractions from time to time but as long and hard it took for you to build your business, it will be even harder to keep it up and running. There is always some new trend out there waiting to take your spot. This industry definitely affects the relationships in my life. When you work 14 hour days sometime you don’t have time for anything else.

Any advice you’d like to offer to anyone interested in your line of work?

First you have to be licensed, second get all of the training you need to be the best at your craft. Take up any workshops for color, cuts, extension, highlights, etc. You want your clients to know that you are versatile. You have to love what you do, this field is not easy. You have to learn patience and be professional at all times.

Ebony Fletcher uses a natural hair product that was introduced to the world in 2010. You heard about it in the movie “Beauty Shop” starring Queen Latifah and in Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair.” The name of the product is called “HAIR KRACK” it’s addictive. Our objective is to give a natural base product to consumers who are suffering from massive hair loss or damaged hair by using products diluted with other ingredients which take away from their natural base element to promote healthier hair instantly. Through the consistent use of Hair Krack our clients will maintain healthier hair, restoring and revitalizing hair follicles.
